Hello there,
I haven't owned hermit crabs for too long now, just under a year, but they're really awesome little pets, and your blog was very informative. I also love your crabitat setups.
I wasn't sure if you'd heard about this, but I wanted to mention it anyways. The painted shells that you often find in petstores and such are actually quite bad for hermit crabs.
I know they look really neat sometimes, but the fact is no matter how well they're made the paint will chip eventually and the crab could injest some. Even if the paint is supposedly 'non-toxic', that's only non-toxic to humans and can still harm the crabs.
Again, just thought I'd mention it since you seem like a very well knowledged owner, you may have heard of it, but it couldn't hurt to spread the word. ^^ Here's some more info on the subject:

Tori I have in fact done the reading on both sides of the never-ending debate about painted shells. I think this is probably the 15th post on my website I have done now on this topic. I understand both sides of this debate. I do however leave adequate and various shells (painted and un-painted) for my hermies to change into. I thank you for your time at writing such a nice long post!
i think we all can see that angels hermies obvesly like the painted shells...... i would too,!

my hermie named cotton died. :( i dont know why though, she wouldnt eat or come out of her shell! she hasnt come out for about 4 months and then she was out yesterday all of the sudden. like out of her shell. She smells bad so she is dead. do you think you know the cause of her death?

painted shells are NOT bad at all!!!! i have had hermies for almost 5 yrs now and most have painted shells and there perfectly fine! one of my hermies is like 3 years old witha painted shell and shes fine! wow tori...

ok tori my hermie shay has eaten like seriously gone into a shell to eat it and shes eaten painted shells! shes still perfectly fine! shes about 4 now!

I had 3 hermit crabs and today one of them, my biggest one, died...I've had him for 2 weeks...he was always the hyper-active fun crab then one day he pinched me. Ever since that day he's been very non-active...it started with him just, not moving as much and then, his antenas werent moving and were just drooping down, and then this morning I picked him up and one of his legs just fell off...later on he smelled and he was dead...why did he die???? any ideas??? I had 3 hermies b4 he died so it probably wasn't a "lonely" issue...every day I give them new food and water...I don't know why he Mr. Crabs died... =(
hey ummm i only have 1 hermie now by causes of death , and i see that your hermies are very active, even when you have them out and are holding them.my only hermit crab left,hermie [my sister named him] he came out of his shell alot and after my most recent one , flapjack, died, he has only came out and played with me once.do u think the cause is loneliness?

I get my shells from a local small family-owned pet store. They dont charge as much for shells as PetCo or PetSmart. However, if I come across a shell that I really like or want, I might give in and pay a ridiculous price for it.
