Pretty is as pretty does....
In the wild you obviously would never see a hermit crab with pretty colored and decorated shells like the ones you can buy in the petstores. This would make them more attractive to prey that want to make a good meal out of them. Hermit crabs occupy vacant sea snail shells in the wild. I have even read that hermit crabs are so desperate for a protective shell that if they can't find an ordinary shell, they have been known to curl themselves into pop bottle caps!!!!

hermies hate painted shells, and it can be toxic to them, do some research and give those poor babues some real shells!!
i have crabs with painted shells. i hate when people say "hermit crabs hate painted shells"... lol it's like, do they speak hermit crab or something? i would love to have taht talent. i give my crabs the option to pick natural or painted and 3 out of 5 of my crabs picked painted shells... so i would like to just say taht whoever made up the crap saying of crabs dont like painted shells, i want so say i think they do! and to angel... i like your crab shells just the way they are!

CrabbyChazzy, I have done the reasearch and I have read both sides of the debate. For your information, I happen to be an educated adult and know the importance of providing your crabs with a pleathera of shells, which I have done. To me, its up to the crabs to decide what they want to wear. However, thank you for your comment.
Do you know the terrible process of how hermies are caught in the wild and they are almost frozen to death to be taken out of their natural shell and put in a hideous painted one. Hermit crabs will eat anything and if paint chips from a shell they will eat and if they don't die they will get very sick from it. If they don't wear them in the wild, we shouldnt over them in captivity.
