Is it a boy or a girl????
Yes, this is a dead crab... but for the sake of science and curiosity I just HAD to post this picture! How do you identify a boy crab from a girl crab? No, there are no boobs or extroverted appendages involved to help you out either! As you can see from this picture, the third set of legs on this crab ... as they attach at the abdomen there are two small holes... thus, making this a female! (girl power!) When the crabs do not have these distinct holes/markings, it is a male. Don't you feel just a little bit better now that you know how to identify the sex of a hermit crab?

whell i still cant tell the diffrence from my crabs because one has only one hole and the other has both holes so one is a gigrl and one is a i dont know what
how do you look to know what it is ? because mine will not stay still at all
Unfortunate for me (and the crabs) I usually dont get to find out if its a boy or a girl until after they have gone to crabheaven. You are right...they dont stay still!

to tell (you have a great pic to tell) slightly tip the crab down so it is hangin in the shell. then postion the crab above your head so you can see its underside. then look for the holes. if no holes its a boy. if holes you have a girl. its that easy.
Erika, yes I have tried that method as well... and end up getting pinched. Sometimes its kind of easy to see their gender if they are trying to stand up on their back legs against the wall. Thats another one of my methods for "checking". Heh....
can you also check by their claws? If yours has a big and little claw is it a boy?
Not really. Claw size has no bearing on the sex of hermies. I once heard that female crabs have more *hair* (or setae) on the abdomen as opposed to males, which have more hairs on their legs. Supposedly females have more hair on their abdomens to hold eggs onto. However, I have never found the *hair factor* to really come into play. For me, the easiest is to check for the gonopores... or *holes*

One Of my hermit Crabs Let Me Flip Him over(I Found Out It Was A He). My Other Hermit Crab Didn't So I put Him on The Clear Lid Of Thir Cage And Let It Dangle Of The Bed A Little And I Saw Under-neath Him To Find THat He Didn't Have To Little Dots. But My Mim said teat Little Sandy jr. ( named Him Before I Found Out If He Was A Boy Or Girl) Might Be So Small You Might Not Be Able To See The Dots!! Is THat True????????
