What do hermit crabs eat?

Hermit crabs can eat all sorts of things like dried fruit, popcorn, crackers, peanut butter, and carrots! Its best not to give them salty items or meaty foods. At most petstores you can get the basic "hermit crab food" which is usually some sort of powder with ground up shrimp bites in it. My crabs prefer their hermit crab cookies and fruit salad that they got for Christmas. Crabs eat very slowly and very little at a time. You always need to make sure your crabs have plenty of drinking water too! Posted by Picasa

A better question would be... How do they eat? do they eat through their antennae? because i put some peanutbutton on the glass of the tank and it looked like they where eatting it off the glass with their antennae... Am I right?

No, their two set of antennae serve only two purposes: one is to urinate and the other is to sense vibrations or "feel" where they are going. Their mouths are about impossible to see, however they have what I call "miniature elaphant-looking trunks" that scoop up their food with. These are well curled up near their abdomens when they are not eating. If you look closely, they will pick up food/water in their claws and then their little "trunks" uncurl out from underneath to grab it and put it in their mouths. Fascinating!!!

well i got tadpoles in the tank with small turtles (4cm), hermits, and crabs. the crabs ate some tadpoles so we seperated them. would the turtles eat the tadpoles? would the hermits eat the tadpoles? and if not what do hermits eat?

Well... I certainly cannot recommend co-habitating hermies with any other animals. I do not really know enough about that. I think that it is just best to ONLY have hermit crabs in a tank with other hermit crabs.

I have really never seen my crabs in water. I have seen them drink from the water, but never totally submerged. I think they take baths and fill their shell water in the middle of the night. They are nocturnal... so, they do all the fun stuff at night while we are sleeping! *darn it!*

Hermit crabs eat a variety of foods! Obviously.. anything in the pet stores that say 'hermit crab food" or something similar! Its also best to provide a calcium source for them... such as dry egg shells or cuttle bone. (you can get that at pet stores too, in the bird section!) I also give my crabs apples, bananas, lettuce, cucumbers, dried fruits and believe it or not....dandelions straight from my yard. They LOVE those!!!!

The only times I have experienced a crab coming totally out of their shell is in the time of death :( (or to change shells - which is done in a matter of seconds)

I have noticed that all of my crabs prefer different types of food. Just like you! You probably dont always like to eat exactly what your friends do, right? Same with the hermies! I recommend giving them a "buffet" of different types of food. I always give my crabs 2 or 3 different types of store bought food and some fresh food such as an apple slice, carrot piece, or lettuce leaf. Try this and see if it works! You may find that your crabs have different types of appetites! Oh, and hermies LOVE a little slice of banana now and again. Please remember that when it comes to food it is important to give them fresh food every day - at least every other day. When it comes to giving them fruits or veggie pieces you MUST take them out after 24 hours of being in the tank because they will start to rot! Also they can attract fruit flies! Not fun! I sure hope this helps! :)

I just recently bought 2 hermit crabs. One was a little bigger than the other and i left them alone for the night and they seem'd fine but when i woke up the smaller one was dead.;_; I thought mabey it was sick when i bought it or something so i bought it another friend(it was smaller too) and the next morning the smaller one was dead too and all in peices, like the bigger hermit crab killed it. Is it normal that the bigger hermit crab just kills a smaller hermit crab?
