Social by nature......

Crabs are social creatures by nature, so if you plan on getting one, plan on getting at least two or three instead. In the wild they travel in groups! Crabs are inexpensive at most petstores and on average cost $6 a piece. Posted by Picasa

Not at all! Actually, hermies are VERY social animals. I would recommend even getting a few more... like 3 or 4 all together for a 10 gallon size tank. This meaning, if they are all babies.

They sure do! In fact, I have given my crabs both of these as treats! They are also allowed to have and love apples and peanutbutter! Can you beleive it? Its true! Just never feed your crab any table meats or super salty items. Salty items could make them swell up.. yikes!!!! The only kind of meat that is good for them is the pre-mixed shrimp already in hermit crab food.

Well.. this depends on the size of your crabs. If they are all super small micro crabs I wouldn't see a problem. However, 7 average sized crabs in a 10 gallon tank is going to make it a bit *crowded*. This is really up to you.

well, i have one very small crab, one average size crab and a HUGE crab. my Brother has one very small crab, and 3 average sized crabs. so will it be to cramped with these crabs? If the ten gallon is to small what size should we get. also if a tank has more crabs will they be happyier?
Thanks for writing back.
write back again please!

Hunny bear, sorry it has taken a LONG time for me to reply. I almost forget that I have this website until I get a comment in my email that there is a new comment here... and I usually receive that while at work. By time I get home I forget about it!

Anyways, it sounds like you have 7 crabs inside of a 10 gallon tank. While this is not "against the law" or anything, you should think about how the hermit crabs think. The more room they have, the more they can have their OWN hiding spots, etc. Having more than 7 crabs in your 10 gallon tank I think would be too much. Too cramped for them. You can sometimes find excellent larger tanks on discount at pet stores or even at lawn sales! (I love lawn sales!) You could even ask one of your parents/guardians to put an ad in the paper that you are looking for an old and decent tank bigger than 30 gallons. You might be amazed to know how many people actually store away old unused tanks in their basements that are just collecting dust!

OOPS! hunny bear, in reference to maybe placing an ad in the paper I meant to say you should ask for a tank larger than 10 gallons, NOT ask for one larger than 30 gallons. Oops!

i have 2 small crabbies and one 10 gallon tank with no lid would they be more happy in it?

weemer - that sounds like a pretty good sized crabitat for 2 small hermies, but you MUST have a lid on it to help retain humidity.
